Also called Yellow Sapote or Egg Fruit, the Canistel is an attractive, small to medium-sized tree suitable for tropical and subtropical gardens. An ornamental addition to the tropical garden, the tree has a pleasing growth habit and is also suitable for cultivation in large tubs. The bright yellow fruits are born on the branches, following on from small clusters of flowers. When ripe, the fruit has a pleasant, mealy texture and a sweet custardy taste that can be likened to a firm egg custard. An adaptable species, that will grow in most soil types, is tolerant of coastal positions, drought hardy once established and tolerant of mild frosts. Trees will produce fruit within 4 years given the right conditions, ample feeding and water. Prune to maintain shape if required.
