A delightful small slow-growing tree with attractive bark and a pleasing growth habit, the Jaboticaba is a great choice for smaller backyards and larger properties alike. Grown for the abundant burgundy-coloured, golf ball-size fruits that emerge from older growth in clusters that follow on from blossoms that are highly attractive to bees. The fruit is known for its sweet, slightly tangy flavours and is eaten fresh, made into jams, jellies and a very tasty wine! A truly prolific producer, the jaboticaba will thrive in tropical and subtropical climates, even surviving cooler weather but does require protection from frosts. Tolerant of coastal positions, jaboticaba prefers neutral, well-drained soil in a full sun or part-shaded position. Trees can be pruned to maintain shape and are suitable for an edible hedge.
