Inga edulis is a fast-growing leguminous species, perfect for permaculture, agroforestry and mixed plantings and performs well in depleted soils. Ideal for creating shade cover for slower-growing fruit trees and shade-loving crops such as mangosteen, cocoa, coffee, vanilla, pepper and durian, this species will also fix nitrogen to the soil. Leaves and mulched timber are a great source of nutritious mulch and the timber is useful as firewood. Flowers are ornamental and fragrant and the large beans produce an edible pulp that is sweet and delicious. Trees easily reach 30 meters in height but also respond well to pruning. Prefers slightly acidic soil, in a frost-free area. Semi-deciduous in cooler areas.
