Small growing, multi-purpose tree for tropical and subtropical gardens. Produces bunches of cylindrical green fruits up to 10cm long that are crisp, juicy and slightly acidic. Fruits are high in Vitamin C and can be pickled or are popular in chutneys and preserves, bringing a sour note. The tree is relatively fast-growing, preferring a full sun position with high humidity, well-drained soil and plenty of organic mulch.  Relatively easy to grow, being drought tolerant once established and tolerant of most conditions, but unable to withstand frosts. The bilimbi has numerous uses in folk medicines, making it a valuable and interesting species to grow. An attractive tree that can be maintained by pruning if required.
