Theabroma cocao - Chocalate tree
The source of commercial chocolate! Large colourful pods produce a multitude of seeds which are fermented, roasted and processed into chocolate. Cocoa ‘beans’ are surrounded by a delicious, sweet fruit that is highly nutritious, sweet and delicious making it perfect for juices and nectars. A small growing tropical tree that requires protection from sun and heavy winds, especially when it is small. Ideal as an understory tree in the permaculture garden where its large, delicate leaves receive some shelter. Cocao trees are slow growing, fruiting after 3 years. Surprisingly hardy once established, they will tolerate periods of cooler temperatures but do require protection from frosts. Preferring a well-mulched, nutrient-rich soil with ample water in dry times. Deal for smaller backyards.
